Brother Russia
Michael Lucas is a one-man porn band. He produces, directs and stars in his own line of adult videos -- such as Fire Island Cruising, Boys On Fire, and Vengeance--spanning the globe to bring you a constant variety of sex.
You left Russia in 1995. What made you decide to do that?
I was always a stranger there. It may sound unusual, but I never quite felt at home in Russia. Maybe it's something to do with being gay in a country where civil rights and freedoms were suppressed.
When you arrived in the United States, what were you most surprised about?
It was great to enjoy all the freedoms and opportunities that the U.S. has to offer. I could fully release and express myself sexually. What surprised me the most, though, was the huge number of conservatives and right-wing Christian fanatics. That and extremely closeted gays, who are wasting the freedoms they have. At the same time, I was pleasantly surprised to find such an active and strong gay community.
What beliefs did you have about the United States that you discovered to be false?
That Americans are cold. Actually, they are incredibly kind and sweet, always trying to help one another.
Tell us about becoming a U.S. citizen. What's that process like? Is there a class you have to take?
I already feel like an American citizen, so getting the U.S. passport is just a logical culmination. I have not had to take a specific class yet, because I already know U.S. history well. It's much shorter than European, but what you have achieved in two centuries is much more great and impressive.
Your bio says you worked with famed porn director Jean-Daniel Cadinot? Were those your first adult videos?
Yes. I did two films for Cadinot, and it was an extremely nice experience compared to my experience making videos for Falcon, which was much less pleasant.
You started your own production company soon after moving to the United States. What motivated you to do that?
I saw that there was a whole unexploited niche for XXX videos with a New York flavor. I found it strange that the capital of the world--famous for its sexual open-mindedness--had no real production company that would reflect the ethnic diversity of the city. New York, in my opinion, has the most gorgeous and most uninhibited men I have ever seen. Plus, they're very natural compared to the overly primped California look, and they have no limits!
You appear in many of your own videos. How do you handle directing and performing at the same time?
I've produced about 20 videos so far, and I did not appear in five of the earlier films. In the beginning, I found it difficult to both direct and star in my videos. Now that things have settled down and I have a great group of professionals backing me up, I can enjoy being in the productions myself.
One thing we love about your work is the energy of the performers, yourself included. Other companies produce work that sometimes lacks sexual energy and enthusiasm. How do you make that happen?
I try to fit my scripts around my guys, rather than trying to cram the guys into a mold. I do casting first, then write the script around what type of guys I cast. I speak to each model myself before making final casting decisions, trying to discover everything about their preferences and turn-ons. It's all about sex, and sex cannot be pushed. If you don't let guys go with their personal sexual desires, the production can become a disaster. Plus, I do not believe in dragging out the filming of a scene over 10 hours, with many breaks and delays in the middle, as Falcon does. I believe in shooting the scene in one go--usually in three hours--to keep the sexual energy high. Also, I now have a strict no-drugs and no-alcohol policy for my guys during the shoot, learning from problems that I had with some guys in the past. Models now have to sign an agreement agreeing that they'll be sent home if they appear high. I have a crew of nice young guys on the set, which creates a good, healthy atmosphere.
Another thing we love is your DVD extras. You display a great sense of humor in the footage you show. We saw that fight between Carlos Morales and Richie Fine in Vengeance and could not stop laughing. Also, the extra footage of you fucking Fine while he whined and cried in Boys on Fire was just crazy. Other people would be afraid to include stuff like that on a DVD, but you did it with no apologies. It definitely leaves an impression. What prompted those unorthodox decisions?
What do I have to apologize for? I thought that the viewer would find these "scandal" scenes interesting, and this extra stuff is a reason people buy DVDs instead of VHS. The viewer always likes to get close to the performers, and this is an interesting way to learn more about them. So I promise to keep including these shocking moments in future DVDs.
Who are your favorite performers to work with?
There are many guys that I would like to work with again. These days Marco Rochelle--from my film Inside Paris--is a favorite. After Paris, I was so impressed with him that I brought him to the U.S. to do Fire Island Cruising Parts 3 and 4. He's absolutely stunning. Besides having a beautiful face, body, cock and ass, he has a wonderful personality, and everyone who meets him loves him from the start. He also will work for me, as both an actor and behind the scenes for the upcoming sequels to Inside Paris. He has signed an exclusive contract with me.
OK, who do you never want to work with again?
The ones who are rude, arrogant and take themselves way too seriously. To mention names is to give them attention, so why bother? You have to be a nice person to work with me again.
